| 碑文・概要 | （裏面）本赤十字社社長（個人名） 日本赤十字社福島県支部長（個人名） 1989年（平成元年）9月 （説明板） 1888年（明治21年）7月15日午前7時45分頃，磐梯山が突如大爆発し，死傷者500余名を数える大惨事となった． この大惨事に際し，日本赤十字社は医療救護員3名を派遣し，地元猪苗代町の医師ともども日夜の別なく，診療，治療の救護活動を展開した． 世界の赤十字は当初戦時救護を目的として誕生したが，その後平時救護を正式にその活動対象に加えることとしたのは，国際機関である赤十字社連盟が設立された1919年以降であり，日本赤十字社の磐梯山爆発における救護活動から30有余年もあとのことであった．このことからも磐梯山爆発における救護活動は赤十字平時救護の先駆的な例として歴史的に注目されているところである． 日本赤十字社福島県支部創立100周年にあたり，先人の発揮された情熱の偉業をしのぶとともに，赤十字活動の発展を祈念して，平時救護にゆかりの当地にこの碑を建立する． 1989年（平成元年）9月 The Site where the First Japanese Red Cross Peacetime Relief Work was Performed At about 7:45 a.m. on July 15, 1888, Mt.Bandai, without warning, erupted in a great torrent, killing and injuring more than 500 people. To cope with this horrible disaster, the Japanese Red Cross Society dispatched three medical personnel, who, together with local doctors at Inawashiro Town, rendered medical relief services day in and day out. Originally, the Red Cross was born with the aim of giving relief during times of war, and it was in 1919 when National Red Cross Societies formed a federation which is now called the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, to promote their peacetime activities that the Red Cross formally added peacetime relief to its objectives. It was, therefore, more than 30 years earlier that the Japanese Red Cross Society engaged itself in relief work for the sufferers from the destruction caused by Mt. Bandai. From this, the relief activities carried out at the time of the eruption of Mt. Bandai are historically regarded as a remarkable example of a pioneer peacetime relief service of the Red Cross. On the occasion to celebrate the Centennial of the Foundation of the Fukushima Prefectural Chapter of the Japanese Red Cross Society, this monument was erected at the site of this historic peacetime relief to commemorate the passion shown and the great service delivered by our predecessors in hopes for the further growth of the works of the Red Cross.
